Goals, dives, injuries and unexpected results; all of this has people shouting at their TV and, increasingly, using social media such as Facebook and Twitter to express their volatile emotions. Today, Facebook announced that total interactions related to the tournament have passed the 1 billion mark. The mammoth figure includes World Cup-related posts, comments and likes between June 12 and 29. Blackphone, the privacy-focused Android smartphone, begins shipping to pre-order customers Posted: 30 Jun 2014 03:58 AM PDT Blackphone, the privacy-focused Android smartphone unveiled back in January, is finally a real product. Collaborators Silent Circle, an encrypted communications firm and Geeksphone, a Spanish smartphone maker today announced that the first handsets have begun shopping to pre-orders customers. It's been a long time coming. Pre-orders opened in February, during Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, and the first handsets were expected to ship in April. The handset itself sports a quad-core 2 GHz processor, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of onboard storage and support for LTE networks. Over 8 million PC gamers were logged into Steam at the same time during the Summer Sale Posted: 30 Jun 2014 03:08 AM PDT PC gaming is far from dead. The latest figures from Steam, the digital storefront and gaming platform run by Valve, the prolific developer behind titles such as Half-Life 2, Portal and Left for Dead, soared past 8 million concurrent users over the weekend. To emphasize, that means over 8 million people – the same as Israel's population – were logged in and using the service at the same time. The previous high recorded on Steam was 7.5 million concurrent users back in December. In short, an awful lot of people are playing games on their Windows, Mac or Linux PC.... Travel planner TripHobo secures funding upward of $1m to become the ‘TripAdvisor of itineraries’ Posted: 30 Jun 2014 12:17 AM PDT We wrote about a travel planner late last year that had a really nifty feature: it helped to optimize your itinerary so you could just pick what attractions you wanted to visit, and it would plan your route for you. Now, Indian startup JoGuru has rebranded itself as TripHobo. CEO and co-founder Praveen Kumar told TNW that the reason for the name change was because many people in the Western world still don't know the meaning of 'guru' — a Sanskrit term for 'teacher' or 'master' most commonly used in Indian religions. Why is Japanese e-commerce firm Rakuten going global with a new $100m fund? Posted: 30 Jun 2014 12:00 AM PDT Rakuten Ventures, the VC fund belonging to Japan's top e-commerce company, is going global after it announced a new $100 million fund. The fund is Rakuten Ventures' second, it is the follow-up to an initial $10 million fund focused solely on Asia. This time around, Rakuten Ventures is expanding its scope to the US and Israel as it seeks to identify companies and technologies that provide benefits and synergies to the mothership. The fund is again led by Singapore-based "one-man team" Saemin Ahn, who tells TNW that he plans to bring on hires to help cover the new geographies. Ahn is prioritizing new hires to cover... California legalizes the use of Bitcoin and other digital currencies Posted: 29 Jun 2014 11:09 PM PDT There's more good news for Bitcoin after California Governor Jerry Brown signed into law a bill known as AB 129 under 'Lawful Money' that basically legalizes the use of Bitcoin and other digital currencies in the state. The bill makes changes to current law to "ensure that various forms of alternative currency such as digital currency, points, coupons or other objects of monetary value do not violate the law when those methods are used for the purchase of goods and services or the transmission of payments." However, as Coindesk notes, the bill does not introduce regulations for Bitcoin, which may fall... LG joins Google’s automotive alliance to help speed up the introduction of Android into cars Posted: 29 Jun 2014 08:14 PM PDT As Google is stepping up its efforts to bring Android into cars, recently unveiling Android Auto at its Google I/O conference, LG is the latest to join the company's Open Automotive Alliance. The OAA was announced earlier this year as a team effort between Google and automotive behemoths Audi, GM, Honda, Hyundai and Nvidia to "accelerate" innovation in the car industry. LG showcased its audio, visual and navigation system for connected cars at Google I/O, and has revealed today that it is expected to be available next year.
