Boinx gets in a party mood with PartySnapper Indiegogo campaign Posted: 27 Jun 2014 05:08 PM PDT Boinx Software is already well known as a publisher of popular photo software like iStopPhoto, iStopMotion, PhotoMagico, and You Gotta See This. But now, it has turned to the Indiegogo crowd funded route to finance development of a crowd-sourced photo album app called PartySnapper. Think of PartySnapper as a social photo wall to which every guest can contribute their own shots to a central collection. PartySnapper has both a photo taking mode for guests and mode for the host. Whenever a guest takes a shot, it's wirelessly transmitted to the host's iPad or iPhone and then added to a slideshow that plays... Dave Winer’s Happy Friends turns Twitter into a mailbox to keep up with your favorite feeds Posted: 27 Jun 2014 04:35 PM PDT The longer you use Twitter, the more people you add to your following list. Soon your feed is a mish-mash of friends, companies, publications and parody accounts. Somewhere in that river of information are the 10-12 people whose tweets you want to keep abreast of. That's where Dave Winer's new Happy Friends comes in. Happy Friends is a mailbox-like reader for organizing the feeds of your Twitter friends. You sign into your Twitter account on the Happy Friends site, add your favorite Twitter feeds via the Friends dropdown in the menu bar and those friends will appear in the white box. Double click... The demise of Apple’s Aperture and iPhoto: What does it mean for you? Posted: 27 Jun 2014 02:48 PM PDT The shoe has finally dropped. Apple confirmed today that it's ditching Aperture, its photo management tool, and iPhoto, its consumer photo editing app, in favor of Photos, a brand new desktop and iOS duo slated for debut in 2015. It all makes sense. While Aperture has undergone some fairly high profile updates in recent years, iPhoto had stagnated badly. When the back-end databases of both apps were hitched together last year, it was a warning that something was on the horizon. But when? Apple works on its own timetable and was not in a hurry to move things forward publicly.... This story continues at The Next Web This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
9 ways virtual reality will affect the startup scene Posted: 27 Jun 2014 12:45 PM PDT It sounds like science fiction, but virtual reality technology is taking off. Not even the sky's the limit for imagining what could be done with this technology. Just ask Google I/O 2014 attendees and their cardboard VR systems. With applications ranging across the board, the potential for startups to capitalize is huge. With this in mind, I asked 12 entrepreneurs from YEC the following question: Facebook recently acquired Oculus VR. Practically speaking, how do you think that virtual reality technology will affect the startup space in the next five years? Here are the responses: 1. Induce a VC Feeding Frenzy In 2007, Facebook began allowing third-party developers to... This story continues at The Next Web This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Google Hangouts video calls no longer require a Chrome plugin Posted: 27 Jun 2014 12:38 PM PDT Google Hangouts video calls will soon be just a tad simpler in Chrome. In a Google+ post, software engineer Victoria Kirst announced that in Chrome you'll no longer need to download and install a plugin. "Just click to start the Hangout, allow Hangouts to use your camera and microphone, and you'll be good to go," she said. The update should be available now for users of the Chrome Dev and Canary channels; the public Chome release should follow "over the next few weeks," according to Kirst. It's a small improvement, but one that should make Hangouts just a little easier to use... This story continues at The Next Web This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Google+ wants to paint your face with your favorite World Cup team in the knockout round Posted: 27 Jun 2014 12:13 PM PDT Wow, that soccer thing is still going? Well, ok then. As an American with almost zero knowledge about the most popular sport in the world, it can be a little hard to get excited. But the United States advanced to the next round, so I'm ready to support my country's team and Google+ has a fun way to do it. Beginning today you can upload a photo of yourself and up to four friends to Google+ and the service will paint your faces with any team in the knockout round. Just upload your photo and tag it with your team... This story continues at The Next Web This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |

Facebook Home is quiet, but not quite dead Posted: 27 Jun 2014 11:18 AM PDT According to an article from the New York Times, the original Facebook Home team responsible for the launcher software for Android devices has broken up. Facebook Home launched with huge plans to change the way you see the social network and then eventually just fizzled out. In fact a phone, the HTC First was launched as a Facebook phone and like the software, it didn't really catch on. However, while the original team has disbanded, that doesn't mean no one is working on the launcher or that it is dead. Facebook told TNW, "There is a team working on Home." The app...
