The dreaded ‘P’ word: Five tips to make your pivot successful Posted: 31 May 2014 05:00 AM PDT Eddy Lu is the co-founder and CEO of Superb (formerly Grubwithus), a mobile app that helps people collect, share and experience must-try places with their friends. For many founders, "pivot" is a dirty word. It hints at uncertainty, even failure. But with three out of four startups flopping, we founders shouldn't shy away from the word. We shouldn't be afraid to acknowledge that change can be good; change gained from experience can benefit companies and users. With our initial concept, Grubwithus, our mission was to help users meet new people and make real world connections while dining at some of the hottest... Father-son developers create service that offers different languages in a single video Posted: 30 May 2014 05:53 PM PDT There's always been a certain je ne sais quoi about going to a foreign film. First, it absolutely confirms that you know how to read (kidding). But second, it implies that you can read between lines of dialog you don't understand, and which are often minimally translated, to get the heart of a story. The father-son creators of an upcoming service called Alugha — still in beta — don't think you should have to work that hard to enjoy a video just because it's not filmed in your language. The pair is working to facilitate the native-language translation of movies, available... This story continues at The Next Web This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Whatsapp returns to the Windows Phone store after fixing technical problem Posted: 30 May 2014 05:23 PM PDT After roughly two weeks away, the Whatsapp Windows Phone app has returned to the Windows Store after a joint effort from Microsoft and Whatsapp. Whatsapp originally pulled the app because of unspecified "technical issues," though it has since come out that the problem appeared to be with how notifications were handled in the latest version of Windows Phone. ➤ Whatsapp for Windows Phone Thumbnail credit: abulhussain / Flickr This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |

Google Search for Android gets global app indexing, content is no longer limited to just English Posted: 30 May 2014 01:22 PM PDT Google today released an important update that ensures app indexing in Google Search for Android works for all content, not just English. The company has also translated its developer guidelines into eight additional languages: Chinese (Traditional), French, German, Italian, Japanese, Brazilian Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish. We contacted Google to ask if app indexing now works in these languages, or what exactly "more languages" refers to, since the company's announcement isn't clear. Google told TNW that the feature is now available globally, but currently will only show content from the apps that the company has manually included. Google today added the... Google’s new EU-mandated link removal form attracts over 12,000 requests in the first day Posted: 30 May 2014 01:16 PM PDT Google received more than 12,000 requests from individuals looking to remove search results from the European versions of its search engine hours after publishing a court-mandated online form on Friday, Reuters reports. The form complies with European Data Protection Law's "right to be forgotten" by providing a way for people to have outdated and irrelevant online information pulled. Earlier this month, Google lost a lawsuit brought by a man seeking to have links to decade-old debt proceedings removed from the search engine. A Google spokesperson told Reuters that the ruling requires the company to make "difficult judgements" with the information. Google's... Google reportedly to show off Android TV platform with online media and gaming focus at Google I/O Posted: 30 May 2014 12:42 PM PDT We already caught a glimpse of Google's rumored Android TV platform back in April, but a new report from Gigaom claims that the company will launch the product at its Google I/O developer conference in June. As you'd expect, Android TV is believed to have a focus on streaming online media like Netflix and Hulu and gaming, similar to Amazon's FireTV set-top box. The major innovation for the new platform is said to be a card-based interface, code-named Pano, that can drop users straight into playing content without having to navigate through an app. It's not clear how Chromecast will fit... Google Stars extension for Chrome leaks: Hands on Posted: 30 May 2014 11:30 AM PDT We've known for a while now that Google is testing a new favoriting service called Google Stars, aimed at helping users save, share, and organize Web content. This is largely due to multiple leaks, detailing features as well as showing off the interface in a video and screenshots. Today, Google+ user Florian Kiersch, who has done the majority of the digging behind the service, has leaked the Google Stars extension for Google Chrome. Kiersch spotted the extension on the Chrome Web Store before Google pulled it, and apparently downloaded it to share with the German site Caschys. That blog in... Keeping watch: How Pebble uses Keen IO’s analytics to track how you use your smartwatch Posted: 30 May 2014 11:25 AM PDT When smartwatch maker Pebble wanted to track ecommerce activity on its site, it turned to custom analytics platform Keen IO. Now, Pebble has tapped the company to also gather data on customer usage of its devices and apps. Keen IO got started 2 1/2 years ago by a group of developers who were tired of building in-house analytics infrastructure. Their goal was to make a platform so flexible that nobody would have to do it themselves ever again. The service allows customers to collect an unlimited amount of data for any type of event and then makes that available in...
