So by way of a quick recap, here's our pick of the newbies from the past month. Sunrise Sunrise finally opened its uber-popular calendar app to Android users this month, as well as a version for desktop Web browsers. Sunrise for Android offers a clean, simple design and useful hooks into third-party services such as Facebook, LinkedIn and Foursquare. It currently supports Google and iCloud calendars, though Exchange support will be added in the future. ➤ Sunrise Swarm (Foursquare) Foursquare was founded... Why we need infographics and how to make them great Posted: 30 May 2014 04:15 AM PDT Alexander Huls is a freelance writer who has been writing about pop culture for over five years. His work has appeared in the New York Times, the Atlantic, National Post, Film School Rejects, and more. This post was originally published on the Shutterstock blog and has been reprinted with permission. Designer Thomas Porostocky, founder of creative agency TOM, believes in the power of infographics. When he talks about them, the enthusiasm in his voice is immediately noticeable. He's also really good at creating them. Having worked with Wired, the New York Times, Nike, IBM, and others, Porostocky is in great demand for his ability to create... Google is pushing Play Music tonight with a live concert TV ad in the UK Posted: 30 May 2014 04:07 AM PDT Tonight, Google will promote its Google Play Music streaming and download services with a live concert aired during a TV ad break in the UK. A performance from singer-songwriter Sam Smith will be live streamed on the Google Play site from 9.30pm, before being piped in for a full commercial break at 10:45pm on Channel 4. It's a novel idea – TV advert breaks are usually filled with short, forgettable commercials, so a comparatively long concert snippet should make viewers sit up and take notice. The advert is just one slice of a renewed marketing push for Google Play services... This story continues at The Next Web This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Samsung targets kids in Southeast Asia with a new content subscription service for tablets Posted: 30 May 2014 04:00 AM PDT As Android phone manufacturers increasingly fight for the attention of consumers, Samsung is taking to content subscription services in a bid to lure potential users. After taking a big step into the music-streaming fray with the launch of its own mobile app called Milk Music, and entering the video-streaming space with its own digital rental service for TV shows called Project Glued in Singapore and the Philippines, Samsung announced today a content subscription service for children aged three to seven years old. The children's content subscription service comes in the form of a mobile app, called Samsung KidsTime, which can be downloaded for free from... Oppo N1 mini smartphone breaks cover with a 13-megapixel swiveling camera Posted: 30 May 2014 03:17 AM PDT Following its rather monstrous N1 smartphone, Oppo is readying a smaller version called the N1 mini. The petite handset has broken cover on the Chinese manufacturer's website, revealing its design and a few tantalising details about the hardware. As with the N1 (our review), the N1 mini is a predominantly white, plastic handset with a silver trim running around its edges. As PhoneArena reports, the smaller version also sports the same 13-megapixel camera as its goliath predecessor, which can be repositioned for both front and rear-facing shots. Otherwise, most of the N1 mini specs remain a mystery. The webpage confirms... This story continues at The Next Web This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Messaging app Kik vows to stay independent Posted: 29 May 2014 11:37 PM PDT With the string of mobile messaging exits recently (in particular Facebook's huge $19 billion acquisition of WhatsApp), Kik seems to be the only leading chat app — with 140 million registered users — that has remained independent. A recent Distimo report pointed out that Kik is competing on an equal footing for the number one spot in the US market. It is little wonder that many are betting on a Kik exit soon. However, Kik founder and CEO Ted Livingston has penned a post saying he is "choosing not to sell" — which hints that Kik probably has had suitors that got rejected. He... Google introduces an online form to let EU users request the removal of outdated links Posted: 29 May 2014 11:26 PM PDT UPDATE: Google has made the online form publicly available. In the form, Google tells applicants that it will assess each individual request as it seeks to balance privacy rights with the public's right to know. When evaluating your request, we will look at whether the results include outdated information about you, as well as whether there's a public interest in the information—for example, information about financial scams, professional malpractice, criminal convictions, or public conduct of government officials. We understand from a source that successfully-removed links will only be dropped from search results displayed on EU-specific versions of Google, but can still... Alibaba is helping its merchants advertise within Chinese online videos Posted: 29 May 2014 11:13 PM PDT Advertising on TV is passé – now Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba is taking to targeting online video viewers instead. The company announced that it will start placing advertisements from merchants on both its shopping platforms, Taobao and Tmall, within online videos on a handful of video sites, as it seeks to capture audiences who are increasingly consuming content on their mobile devices and PCs. The online video sites that Alibaba has tied up with include top site Youku Tudou, which is often viewed as a Chinese version of YouTube. It comes after Alibaba sunk $1.2 billion into it last month. Starting next month, Taobao... This story continues at The Next Web This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |

SpaceX unveils a ‘fully reusable’ spacecraft that can carry 7 astronauts and land anywhere on Earth Posted: 29 May 2014 08:57 PM PDT SpaceX founder Elon Musk took the wraps off its next-generation spacecraft today, called Dragon V2. The key improvements are that Dragon V2 will be able to land "anywhere on Earth" with its propulsion system and the accuracy of a helicopter. It will also be capable of carrying seven astronauts for several days. Musk said Dragon V2 is capable of docking autonomously, and that it can land either via the propulsion system, or in the case that any engines aren't working — deploy parachutes for a safe landing. Even after starting the propulsion system, it can afford to lose two engines... This story continues at The Next Web This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
