Google is spending $770 million on a new data centre in the Netherlands Posted: 23 Sep 2014 04:33 AM PDT Google has announced plans to build a new data centre in Europe, this time in Eemshaven, a seaport in the Netherlands. The internet giant says it has put aside €600 million ($772 million) to build the new data centre, and will be its fourth location in Europe after Finland, Belgium and Ireland. Google currently has more than 10 data centres across the Americas, Europe and Asia. Indeed, its first two Asian data centres opened just last year, in Taiwan and Singapore. Google says the new facility will create more than 1,000 jobs, with a view towards starting "initial opertions" in... Microsoft pushes China Xbox One launch date back to September 29 Posted: 23 Sep 2014 04:05 AM PDT Microsoft had pencilled in September 23 for the Xbox One's launch in China, but now it has been delayed by almost a week. As Reuters reports, the Xbox One will arrive in China on September 29, representing the first such launch following a 14-year ban on foreign games consoles. The console will cost 3,699 yuan (around $600) sans Kinect, and 4,299 yuan ($700) with the motion-detecting accessory. ➤ Microsoft Xbox One set to launch in China on September 29 [Reuters] Thumbnail image credit - GLENN CHAPMAN/AFP/Getty Images The post Microsoft pushes China Xbox One launch date back to September 29 appeared first on The Next Web. Nearly half of Apple’s customers using the App Store have iOS 8 on their device Posted: 23 Sep 2014 03:44 AM PDT After a slow start, Apple customers are beginning to adopt the company's new iOS 8 platform in larger numbers. The US company updated its App Store Distribution page today to show that nearly half (46 percent) of users who visited the Apple Store on September 21 were using the week-old operating system. A number of third party tracking sites found that the early numbers of iOS 8 installs were lower than that of iOS 7 at the same stage last year. That could be down to the sheer demand for the new platform, which Apple CEO Tim Cook says is the most... FIFA 15 Ultimate Team is now available for Android, Windows Phone and iOS Posted: 23 Sep 2014 03:37 AM PDT Good news for fans of the FIFA franchise – EA has launched FIFA 15 Ultimate Team (UT) for Android, iOS and Windows Phone this week. FIFA 15 UT introduces more than 10,000 players from 500 teams, letting you build your dream team and see how they fair against your rivals. It differs from the main FIFA games, insofar as you 'unlock' players for your team. You play games, earn points and then use points to buy 'packs' that give you access to more players for your team. Though the game itself is free to download, there are in-app purchases. For example,... Jolla’s Sailfish OS smartphone goes on sale in India, exclusively on Snapdeal.com Posted: 23 Sep 2014 03:04 AM PDT As expected, Jolla's Sailfish OS-powered smartphone is now on sale in India, available exclusively through Snapdeal.com, one of India's major online marketplaces. Founded by a group of ex-Nokia employees who believed that MeeGo deserved a second chance, Jolla is the first smartphone to offer a fresh take on the forgotten platform, which is now called Sailfish OS, and the bundled Sailfish browser is built on Mozilla's open source Gecko browser engine. Last December, we announced the Jolla smartphone was finally going on sale across Europe through an online store on Jolla's website. And now, it's available in India too, for Rs. 16,499 ($270... Instagram ads arrive in the UK Posted: 23 Sep 2014 01:40 AM PDT As promised, Instagram is bringing ads to its users in the UK. They will begin to appear in the app later today and will feature "carefully selected brands" such as Starbucks, Cadbury and Sony Music. Ads will be highlighted with a "Sponsored" tag next to the name of the photo or video's creator. The hope is that they'll be of an exceptional quality and feel like native content, which users are then happy to interact with in their feed. "We want ads on Instagram to be as engaging and high-quality as the experience of flipping through a favourite magazine," James Quarles, Global... The Apple Watch is actually thinner than you might think Posted: 23 Sep 2014 01:28 AM PDT Yesterday I had a interesting conversation with Alex, our talented designer at The Next Web, about the Apple Watch. We talked about how it supposedly isn't waterproof, and if there would've been a market for the Nike Fuelband or not. We also wondered if future versions might contain a camera or not. When I asked him if he was considering getting one, he said "Well yeah, maybe the next version when they make it thinner. This one is too thick for me". Then we looked at his Rolex up close and I suggested the Apple Watch might only be two or three millimeters thicker.... See who’s remixed and covered your favorite songs with WhoSampled for Android Posted: 23 Sep 2014 12:57 AM PDT London-based startup WhoSampled answers music's most frustrating question, as we wrote back in 2009: Where DO I recognize that song from? In a nutshell, the service scans the music on your device to tell you who has sampled, remixed and covered each song. And now, two years after it arrived for iPhone users, it's finally available on Android too. How it works You will need to create an account to use the local-library scan feature and add tracks to your favorites, though you can peruse the service generally without having to sign up. Once in, hit 'My Library' and WhoSampled... This story continues at The Next Web The post See who’s remixed and covered your favorite songs with WhoSampled for Android appeared first on The Next Web. Ex-Microsoft exec Ray Ozzie’s Talko messaging and calling app launches, initially for iOS only Posted: 22 Sep 2014 09:48 PM PDT Former Microsoft exec Ray Ozzie has finally launched his much-anticipated new startup — mobile messaging and calling service Talko — to the public today. The service is initially iOS-only, and it aims to bring a range of mobile communications, including calls, text messages, voice messaging and location, together into a single package. Talko looks much like other mobile messaging apps, but it aims to address the need for collaborative, business communications, Ozzie told Re/Code. The 10 person Talko team is working on an Android app, alongside video calling and other features. ➤ Talko for iOS | Via Re/Code Thumbnail image via Justin Sullivan /... Apple’s first iPhone 6 ads focus on improved cameras and, of course, larger screens Posted: 22 Sep 2014 09:02 PM PDT Apple teased a set of iPhone 6 commercials featuring Jimmy Fallon and Justin Timberlake at the launch event for the new smartphones, and now the company has posted its first two ad spots online. The videos are interesting because they are among the first wave of messages that Apple is using to position these new devices as being attractive to consumers. Not to mention that they use two voices that will be recognized in households across America, and perhaps beyond too. With a record 10 million sales under its belt from the opening weekend of iPhone 6 sales, the company now needs to go...
