Posted: 27 Jun 2014 04:16 AM PDT

Prezi
Building a startup anywhere is hard, but it's especially difficult if you're based in a country that isn't a huge market itself. One company that has managed to make it big despite such a restriction is Prezi, which designs and creates 'zooming' presentation software – a cloud-based presentation and storytelling tool for sharing ideas on a virtual canvas. We sat down with co-founder Adam Somlai-Fischer. Prezi has been used by over 40 million people and 80 percent of Fortune 500 companies. Prezi was established in Budapest, Hungary in 2009 and the word 'prezi' is the Hungarian short form of 'presentation.' Along with co-founders Peter Arvai and Péter Halácsy,...

Facebook users in the UK can now choose from more than 70 different gender types following an expansion of the extended options outside of the US. The move is being made to "better reflect society", according to The Independent, and in addition to being able to select a gender beyond simply male or female, users can also now specify which pronoun they'd like used when referring to them on the platform. For example, "Wish him a happy birthday!", "Wish her a happy birthday!" or "Wish them a happy birthday!"   To tinker with these settings, go to your About page, select 'Edit' next to Gender,...

After bringing in more than $1.5 million in revenue in its first month, Japan-based chat app Line is extending sales of its user-generated stickers initiative – Creators Market – out of Asia and into the US, UK, Brazil and six other countries. The initiative allows independent artists, or indeed anyone, to create animations for sticker packs which, if approved, are sold across Line's messaging service to its 470 million registered users. Creators keep 50 percent of the proceeds, the rest goes to the app store gatekeepers — Apple or Google — and Line. SWEDEN-FACEBOOK-DATA-CENTER-SERVERS
Facebook has been striving for transparency in its dealings with various law enforcement agencies around the world, particularly with its Government Requests report which was first released in August 2013, but it faces several challenges. To illustrate this (and reassure users of its transparent approach), the company has just revealed details of its fight against a set of sweeping search warrants issued by a court in New York last summer. As reported by Bloomberg, the case concerned an investigation conducted by the Manhattan District Attorney to weed out people suspected of cheating to obtain disability benefits. Facebook's deputy general counsel, Chris...

Hands on with Project Tango, Google’s wild shot at making devices see the world

Posted: 26 Jun 2014 05:04 PM PDT

Today at Google I/O we spent some time at the Project Tango booth; if you're not familiar with Tango, it's a new technology Google is working on that will allow phones/tablets to give "human-scale" sense of space and motion. Project Tango was born out of ATAP over a year ago with the very first consumer-focused prototype unveiled being an odd-looking phone that featured three cameras. Unfortunately, we discovered today that Google's discontinued the Tango phone, but is back this year with it's new Project Tango tablet instead that's even more refined and has some impressive real-world applications. There's a series of...
