(CNN) — Michael Jackson wanted to live forever. Just a year and a half before his death, I conducted what ended up being the last major interview with the reclusive Jackson in his suite at the Carlyle Hotel in New York City. And his words stopped me.


Five years ago, the world lost one of the greatest entertainers of all time. But Michael Jackson's legacy lives on through superstars including Beyoncé, who paid tribute to her idol in a short and sweet note on her website.


Michael Jackson died on June 25, 2009, in a desperate search for sleep as he prepared for a comeback tour that he hoped would pull him out of deep debt and restore his reputation as the world's top entertainer.
